On Saturday, during the activities at the Napocska Hungarian School we are going to focus on the Hungarian carnival, called Farsang.

Farsang is traditionally celebrated between Epiphany and Ash Wednesday. This holiday is marked by many fun activities. Hungarians dress up in funny and/or scary costumes, organize masquerades, parades or balls.

One of the most well known parades is the Busójárás (trans.: ‘Buso walking’), which is held yearly in Mohács. This event is a loud one since the purpose of it is to scare away bad spirits of winter and make way for the fertile spring. Those who participate in it walk in an organized group on the streets of Mohács wearing scary masks and ringing cow bells for example to make as much noise as possible.

Besides learning about these traditions, we are going to create fun crafts and get ready for our Farsang celebration at the HCAP (on FEBRUARY 11th).

The tiny ones are going to have a mommy-baby group set up and we’re going to be ready with special activities for them as well.
