Az idén is megünnepeltük Phoenixben Szent István, illetve az államalapítás napját. Mivel az ünnep egybeesett a Napocska magyar iskola évnyitó foglalkozásával, ott gyűltünk össze és egyben ezzel kapcsolatos foglalkozást tartottunk.

A gyerekek – és felnőttek egyaránt – Szent István királyról tanultak és beszélgettek, s ugyanakkor arról is, hogy miként ünneplik e napot Magyarországon. A mesterségek ünnepéből kiindulva, a gyerekek különböző mesterségekről beszélgettek, majd cukrászok lettek és kókusz golyókat készítettek az iskolakezdést követő potluck-ra.

Once again, this year we celebrated St. Stephen’s Day, also known as the State Founding Day with our organization’s Napocska Hungarian School. This time, the celebration was on the actual State Founding Day, August 20th, a day that coincided with Napocska’s first day of school.

The children – and adults alike – talked and learned about King St Stephen, and about the celebrations in Hungary and Budapest. inspired by the arts and craft festival that takes place on this day in Hungary, the children talked about different trades and jobs. They eventually all became pastry chefs and made coconut balls for the after-school potluck.

Mit is ünneplünk augusztus 20-án? Szent István, az államalapítás, és az új kenyér ünnepe

Augusztus 20-a Magyarország nemzeti ünnepe, az államalapítás és az államalapító Szent István király emlékének ünnepe. Az államalapítás egy történelmi folyamat volt, amikor Szent István király megteremtette az önálló Magyar Királyságot az első ezredfordulón.

Ez persze hosszú folyamat volt és egyáltalán nem zökkenőmentes, tehát nem egy nap alatt fejeződött be. Hogy pont augusztus 20-án ünnepeljük azt annak köszönhetjük, hogy István királyt halála után 45 évvel, ezen a napon avatták szentté. Így az államalapítást és István király szentté avatását ünnepeljük ezen a napon.

Mivel az ünnepnek egyházi jellege volt, a kommunista rendszer nem engedhette meg így ünnepelni. Eltörülni sem akarta ugyan, ezért az új kenyér ünnepének nevezte el. Innen származik az új kenyér ünnepe, amit később hozzáadtak az államalapítás ünnepéhez amikor 1991-ben, a rendszerváltás után az új Országgyűlés ismét hivatalos nemzeti és állami ünneppé nyilvánította e napot.

What Are We Celebrating On August 20th? King St Stephen And The Foundation Day Of Hungary

August 20th is the national holiday of Hungary, the celebration of the founding of the state and of the memory of the founder, King St. István. The founding of the state was a historical process, when King Saint Stephen created the independent Kingdom of Hungary at the turn of the first millennium.

Of course, this was a long process that took years, and was not completed in a day. August 20th was chosen to celebrate it since it was the day of King Stephen’s canonization, the day he became a saint, 45 years after his death. That’s why we celebrate both the founding day of the state and the canonization of King Stephen on this day.

We also celebrate the Day of the New Bread on the same day. This celebration originates from the Communist era, when the country couldn’t celebrate St Stephen’s Day because of its religious background. However, instead of erasing the holiday people would celebrate anyway, they renamed it the Day of the New Bread. After the change of the regime, in 1991, the new Parliament declared August 20th a National Holiday as St Stephen’s Day, the State Founding Day, and added the New Bread Day to it, since by then a whole new generation celebrated it.
